Thick Very Berry Syrup

This is the perfect topping for every pancake and waffle.  I made this on the stove while I mixed up the waffle recipe and made them in the griddle.  It wasn't any real work and offered a lot more flavor than regular syrup.  And I am posting it here, just as the berries begin to ripen and arrive in the grocery stores. Enjoy!

Thick Very Berry Syrup
(printer friendly version)
2 cup mixed berries (This recipe included blueberries and strawberries.)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice

Add berries, sugar and water to a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Crush berries as this cooks at a simmer for 2-3 minutes.  I used a potato masher.  Add orange juice, return to a simmer and serve warm over waffles, pancakes or even vanilla ice cream.
