Sloppy Joes

A few years ago when I went on a health kick, which seems to happen a lot as people approach their 40th year, I committed to providing my family with meals that were free of corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, food dyes and preservatives.  Now, I am not perfect and sometimes a Happy Meal is needed in order to complete the day and get in bed in a timely fashion, but overall I've tried to fulfill this promise.

The men in my house adore a Manwich like sandwich, as do I.  So, here is my recipe that meets my standards. Toasting the buns before serving really adds a great crunch to the bread and prevents it from becoming soggy.  I enjoy my sandwich topped with a bit of sharp cheddar cheese.

Savannah's Sloppy Joes

2 lb lean ground beef
1 onion
1 bell pepper
2 cloves garlic
1 - 15 oz can chopped tomatoes
1 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (I used a mustard based sauce.)
1/4 cup steak sauce
cayenne hot pepper sauce
cheddar cheese, shredded

Chop the onion, pepper and garlic and add to skillet with ground beef.  Brown and then drain the meat.  Add remaining ingredients with the exception of the hot pepper sauce and cover, simmer for 40-45 minutes.  Remove cover, add a few dashes of hot pepper sauce (to your liking) and continue simmering for a few minutes to reduce liquids.  Serve on toasted buns and top with cheddar cheese, if desired.
