This recipe was originally posted in February of 2010. With all of the Labor Day celebrations I thought I would repost it so that you could make it and share with friends. Enjoy! -Savannah
1 (9 inch) pie crust, baked
1 1/4 cups white sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
6 tablespoons cocoa
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups milk
4 egg yolks
3 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 egg whites
1/2 cup sugar
In medium saucepan, combine sugar, flour, cornstarch, cocoa and salt. In a medium bowl, beat milk and egg yolks until smooth. Gradually stir into sugar mixture. Stir constantly over medium heat until mixture thickens and comes to a full boil. Boil and stir for one minute.
Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Stir until melted.
Pour into pie shell. Place plastic wrap over filling to prevent skin from forming and chill for several hours. Top with meringue or whipped cream and chocolate curls if so desired.
To make meringue
Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar. Continue, beating until stiff peaks form. Top chocolate with meringue. Bake in 400 oven for 6 min or until meringue browns.
